The reason for giving Christmas Presents

In Ancient Rome, during the feast of Khalends, gifts were offered to the Roman Emperor by high ranking officials. This feast was held during the winter solstice, the period which seems to coincide with the Christmas season. This tradition is the earliest known source of Christmas presents.

There is another belief that St Nicholas was the originator of Christmas Presents. There is folk lore that says that St. Nicholas heard a father’s lament about not being able to find the dowry money for his daughters’ marriages. St Nicholas who happened to hear this is said to have left three sacks of gold coins for the dowries.

Christmas is celebrated by Christians the world over and they believe that the greatest of ever was the gift of Baby Jesus. They believe that Christmas Presents are a token to remind them about the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, which was brought by the three Kings.

Children all over the world believe that Santa Claus will be coming to town on Christmas Eve. They write letters to him asking for what they want most and they wait with a lot of hope that Santa would bring them their Christmas presents.

Families enjoy Christmas morning by sitting round the tree and exchanging Christmas presents and opening them. The are beautifully wrapped in coloured paper and placed under the tree. Much care and love goes into choosing the right for the right person and it is a joy to give them as it is to receive them.

The tradition of Christmas presents as it is today is supposed to have originated in America in the early nineteenth century. With advertising, this led to a mind set that are a novel idea and that they should be exchanged during the season of good cheer.

Unfortunately over the years Christmas has become very commercialized. The evolution of the advertising industry made Christmas a season that was to be enjoyed with tables groaning with food and stores emptied of its merchandise. In early times gifts were either fruits or sweets or a home made handicraft which was appreciated unlike the expensive ones of today that may capture one’s fancy for a very short time.

It would be good if one were to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas sans the unnecessary trappings. The Christmas Presents then given will be more meaningful for both parties.

The tradition of dates as far back to the time of Ancient Rome when gifts were given to the Emperor by high ranking officials during the winter solstice.
