Zanzibar – Stone Towns and Sandy beaches.

Article by Thom Sanders

As the sun set over the sparkling turquoise waters, the waves lapping up to the white coral shores with the sound of monkeys chattering somewhere in the rafters, and the dusk lightly fragrant with spices, I was once more reminded how perfect Zanzibar was as a honeymoon destination. My dark wood bungalow with its little balcony, huge four poster bed and delicious outlook onto the Indian Ocean was just right for happy twosomes on a romantic getaway. Imagine lazy walks hand in hand through white sand, fresh fish suppers by candlelight and long lie-ins. You get the idea.

I, on the other hand, was alone. Well, not quite. I had joined a local travel company’s solo holidays to see if this five star dream destination could work for the single traveller. Would the crystal clear waters, beautiful resorts and twitter-patted charm of Zanzibar appeal to a long time singleton?

In a word, yes, it certainly would.

I was not alone in the true sense but part of a larger group on an adventure holidays. Our group had met in Saadani airport, where for the first week we exercised the adventurous part of our holiday on safari in mainland Tanzania. Bidding farewell to the game reserves and great beasts, we boarded a light aircraft to Tanzania, which was an eye opening experience. Powering up into the air, the little plane bobbed into the skies riding the streams of air as we gained height above the wild bush land. Eyes shut and heart in my stomach I was eased into opening them when I heard the gasps and happy talk of my fellow passengers. No wonder, as I opened my eyes, the view was magnificent. We were crossing the water to Zanzibar and it shone a mesmerizing blue below us.

At the airport we were met by our guide with a warm smile, the first of many in Zanzibar. Our first stop was Stone Town, one of my favourite parts of the island, where winding cobbled streets lead the way through the white stone houses, past stalls selling fresh fish and spices and onto the coast, where children jumped into the crashing waves and men returned with their fishing nets. At night, there was still much to see, as the night market hustled and bustled in full swing. We then zoomed off to the eastern side of the island, whose heady delights I am pleased to report can be enjoyed on a solo holidays.

Zanzibar Soft Sandy Beaches

Article by Alta van Wyk

Zanzibar -the “Spice Island” notorious for its spices such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, infuse and more, is located in the Indian ocean about 40km east of Tanzania and is part of an archipelago made up of Zanzibar (also known as Unguja, but more regularly known as Zanzibar), Pemba Island (situated North East from Zanzibar) and smaller islets surrounding Zanzibar. Zanzibar is known for its handsome sallow smooth beaches filled with coconut palms and surrounding coral reefs, absolve ocean water and loaded saga.

Accommodation in Zanzibar can be divided into two categories hotels in historical Stone Town and the prevalent coast hotels/resorts. Some of the hotels or resorts have a more pastoral feel to them, generally built of regional materials and thatched roofs and are generally the two star and three star properties while others are more current and contemporary in sort – usually the four and five star hotels. Most of the hotels are set in charming gardens by the seashore and tender a stretch of activities to be enjoyed by guests. The East coast hosts the most accepted resorts and hotels and great accommodation can also be found in the North in Nungwi. The east coast’s beaches are more lovely but they face the prevailing winds and as a answer the seas here are a bit rougher, but during low tide the water cultivate to draw back very far (sometimes as far as the coral reef surrounding the island). Not far from the East coast are the Mnemba reefs which make for absolutely spectacular diving and many of the hotels are able to take you out to the reefs.

Zanzibar is a great destination for relaxing, diving, snorkeling, grave sea fishing, swimming with the dolphins and other water activities. A trip to the historic Stone Town with its narrow pathways and lively markets is an interesting cultural experience. Zanzibar is also home to the pink Red Colobus Monkey, which is recognized as a manifest species.Temperatures are belief for for all year trek, but from April to June the monsoon rains tumble but it usually does not sprinkle every day during this time. December can be very hot as it is the highest summer month in Zanzibar and June the climax iciness month with enjoyable mild temperatures. Looking for Summer Fun in the Seychelles? Consider the Top 5 beaches in Praslin

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Think of the Seychelles and one is inundated with mental images of secluded surf and crystal clear waters. It is easy to see why this is the dream holiday destination of so many around the world, as Seychelles does seem to be blessed with more than a fair share of exotic lures and surprises.

Of the hundreds of atolls that comprise the jewel-string archipelago, Praslin Island is assured a preferred spot in the hearts of international holiday makers. With its inimitable sense of wicked style and high-end accommodation and dining options enhancing the allure of its seductive landscapes, Praslin can be described as temptation galore.

Found about 45 kilometres northeast of the country’s capital, Seychelles’ second largest island straddles the line between vibrantly busy and charmingly tranquil. Only 12 km long and 5km wide, the island has only a few thousand permanent inhabitants and is serviced by its main port Baie St Anne at its south-eastern tip. The famous prehistoric forest of Vallée de Mai and the wealth of colourful endemic bird life are only the start of what Praslin’s natural bounty has to offer. However, the largest part of Praslin’s popularity is probably owed to the fact that many of the Seychelles’ most renowned beaches are found on this island

Anse Lazio is arguably Praslin’s most famous stretch of surf, with a firm position in the top 10 list of the world’s tourist beaches. The sands run in a perfect kilometer long crescent, shaded by palm and takamaka trees amidst drifts of pure white sand and large outcrops of granite rock. Located on northwest Praslin’s Bay Chevalier, the high waves of Anse Lazio discourages snorkeling, but is a great spot to enjoy its blazing rainbow sunsets.

Anse Georgette is also considered one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. A wonderful swimming spot, this beach can be accessed only via boat or the nearby Lemuria Resort. Anse Volbert is a stretch of beach along which is found many of the island’s larger resorts. Perfect for water sports and beach activity, this beach is best for rambunctious gatherings rather than quiet seclusion.

Grand Anse is the longest beach in the island and is also the home of one of Praslin’s only two villages. The beach stands out as it is congested with seaweed and boasts a long stretch of shallow waters perfect for snorkeling. This makes for some stunningly psychedelic sunsets.

Anse Takamaka rounds off the top five Praslin beaches; the long ribbon of secluded surf is favoured by some of the most luxurious resorts in the Seychelles. Raffles Seychelles Praslin is a Seychelles resort located here. The sprawling, all-villa resort brings the Raffles touch to augment your Seychelles hotel experience, poised to offer world-class spoiling and pampering in the heart of paradise.
